And the page turned..

Changed homes
Changed cities
Changed life

Twin Towers to Ground Zero

Home changed
City changed
Life changed

Now familiar

I have moved on..

Or have I ?

I wrote these lines when I first moved cities as a grown up.

It was a move within India, from Hyderabad to Bangalore.  It was not my first move though. My parents had moved from Madhya Pradesh to Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh when I was 8 and my little brother was 4. Even though little, it was not an easy move for me and I am sure neither was it for my brother. A lot changed and simple coping mechanisms were developed in their own unique ways by 2 kids, to survive the massive change. It was a not an easy move for a child who came from a Hindi speaking state and school to move into an English school and Telugu speaking state. A lot changed – personally, academically and socially. But of course when you are thrown into a cauldron of soup, you kinda learn to warm up slowly until you reach that level where you are deliciously perfect.

My second Move was from Hyderabad to Bangalore. Bangalore, a city that despite the initial discomfort became home in true sense. A city that allowed me to grow up professionally, emotionally and spiritually. Life got awesomely beautiful with my little bubba , my son, who filled my days with sunlight. Soup continued to simmer.

The third move was from Bangalore, India to Munich, Germany. Once again the primary changes were the language, social interactions and profession related. All good – Cauldron churning at the best temperature – almost mid way.

A dash of creme and some herbs to bring out the flavours & add the mellowness to that soup in the making. Here comes the fourth move. This time from Germany to England. Unexpected yet known and anticipated at a deep inner level. Its been almost 25 days and the physical settling in is happening.

By now I know that this is a passing phase.

It has been amazingly interesting to stay in the present and know that it is turning into the past.  I literally feel the pages of time turning over and its an extraordinary feeling.  I cannot explain this experience, just like I cannot explain to anyone what ‘sweet’ tastes like. The frequency needs to be tuned into to go thru this experience and that dear friends, is a matter of time.

Fear – That monster under your bed

Fear holds us back…more often than it should. Fear restricts us and places boundaries on that, which we are perfectly capable of achieving. We have learnt that it is safer to fit into the contained mold of known emotions, known territory, known work/job criterion. We have learnt that trying something new or choosing something, that not many others choose, is risky.

Safe is traditionally what we do…despite the innumerable examples that we see, read and hear about otherwise. We choose to obliterate the methodology and the realness of people who have stepped out of the safe boundaries despite their fears and apprehensions. We categorize them as ‘brave’ or ‘lucky’. We choose to revere them and say – “Wow, I wish I could do that !!” Well, why can’t you? Who stops you from achieving what you ‘want’ to achieve? Who is holding you back?

I think successful people are not fearless or unafraid. I think successful people choose to keep going, despite their fears. I think success depends upon how well one is aware of one’s fears. It also depends upon how well one understands these fears and deals with them.

It is alright to know that there is a monster under the bed. Being aware of the monster under the bed, allows us to prepare ourselves to deal with that very monster under the bed, and identical ones that might appear thru the night. Similarly it is alright to have fears and to be aware of these fears. Being aware of our fears allows us to prepare ourselves to deal with these fears and other identical ones that might appear as life goes by. Being aware allows us the following choices 1) deal with the fears 2) let go of the fears and 3) sometimes just make peace with them. Awareness is the most powerful tool we possess, towards making a change.

In the words of the wise – “A further sign of health is that we don’t become undone by fear and trembling, but we take it as a message that it’s time to stop struggling and look directly at what’s threatening us. ”  – Pema Chödrön

So, It is alright:

To have fears.

It is alright to be aware of your fears.

It is alright to choose to deal with your fears.

It is alright to let go of your fears.

It is also alright to make peace with your fears.

What is not alright is:

To continue feeding your fears

To continue staying frozen by your fears

To continue walking a few steps behind everyone else, due to your fears

To continue staying still because of your fears.

Ripples of truth

And just like that the dream shattered.

Even though she had suspected for a while that it would, the sound of the crash was louder than she had expected.

Here is the thing about broken dreams. They are not easy to deal with. They crash and they scatter all over, creating a big mess that needs to be swept up. Sometimes the saving grace is  that people understands this particular sorrow of loss. In reality they may have helped bring on the process of shattering or even actually taken over and shattered the dream. But when they see you standing in silence and and looking at those scattered pieces, tears streaming down your cheeks – they sometimes do understands. At times you also get lucky enough to have everyone step back and allow you the time to mourn the loss.

In this respect, she got lucky. The world stepped back and allowed her the space to absorb the sight of those little bits and pieces that her dream had shattered into. Thru the haze of her misty eyes, she could see her reflection, her ambitions, her plans and her future in each one of those tiny pieces. Potentially this would have been a good time to sink into a depression or have a nervous breakdown – like the books suggested or the umpteen number of movies portrayed. It would be easy and everyone would actually understand. She could withdraw from all the pain that surrounded her being, and retreat into the gentle white softness of silence.

She felt alone and unsupported. It seemed like everyone had given up on her. She felt completely written off – devoid of potential or a possible future. There is something about the lack of ‘show of support’. If it does not happen at the right time – it becomes ineffective, like medication that has passed its expiry date. In her case, the lack of ‘words of support’ gave rise to a silence within her being, that she found strangely peaceful. It was a space where she could experience and see everyone as they were. No layers of words to cover up their real thoughts – no pretense of love. Just plain indifference that she found easy to accept. This actually seemed really nice. She liked the feeling. It was akin to wearing no makeup – which she disliked wearing. It felt like being alone  in nature, under the sky – in her minuscule spot in the universe. A spot that belonged to her.

And then, in that silent space, something magnificent happened. Amidst the sounds of her dream crashing and reverberating loudly – there were ripples of a stark realization that echoed into infinite loops, through the eternal vastness of the universe.

She had not yet given up on herself – not yet.

She had not written herself off

This is what mattered.

This is ALL that mattered.

Be the change you wish to see

Lost in thoughts

(This post targets the hatred and mistrust that the Muslim community is facing all over the world – in view of the Paris attack. There were seven coordinated terror attacks in Paris carried out by militants, killing at least 129 people.)

It is saddening to hear generalizations that are being made, about entire communities, based on the ugly actions of some.

In times of crisis such as these, it would help to remember that we have been blessed with intelligent minds (I know I know I am generalizing here) that are capable of understanding a simple fact that – terrorism is based in minds – killing innocent people in Paris, Lebanon, Iraq or lynching a person on the streets because he or she went against your beliefs, raping a little child, because that child was available or abducting girls in Nigeria – each one of those qualify as terrorist activities.

Terrorism is terrorism, in all its heinous, wretched, evil forms. It is a disease of the worst kind and needs to be dealt with and eradicated. No terrorist should be allowed to go scot-free for killing and terrorizing innocent people.

However, terrorism has nothing to do with those innocent others in the community or race who by no choice of theirs, happen to have been born in the same religion/race/community/caste as that of the terrorists. All Muslims cannot be blamed for the horrendous criminal deed of Isis/Daesh…just as all Hindus cannot be blamed for the lynchings that took place because someone happened to eat beef nor can all Buddhists be blamed for torturing and killing Muslims in Myanmar or all Christians be blamed for the Wisconsin Sikh Temple massacre.

Terrorism is a cowardly, destructive instinct that hides behind religion, beliefs and a sense of misplaced entitlement. Anders Behring Breivik, KKK, Al Quaida, Daesh and many more like them are terrorists – All Christians, all Atheists, all Muslims are NOT. They cannot and should not be condemned because some terrorists belong to the same religion of community as them.

Using our beautiful, intelligent minds we can work towards finding solutions instead of spewing hatred over social media. Let us think before we speak or write on facebook/twitter and elsewhere and let us pledge to think twice before we question people and their loyalty. Social Media is free but our words  have value. It is completely upto us to make that value negative or positive.

Let’s choose to be tolerant, aware, magnanimous human beings just as we want our children to be – Let us model the behaviour not just for the times that we are in but also for our children so they can learn and grow up to be large-hearted, magnanimous loving people who can distinguish between a diseased terrorist and a religion/community in which the terrorist happened to have been born.

Today there is pain and trauma that all of us are dealing with – some directly and some indirectly. Many of us are broken-hearted with the violence that took place and the beautiful lives that were lost due to that horrifying, mindless violence – Not just in Paris but in so many parts of the world.

Awareness, Kindness, Understanding and Love might just be the right place to start the healing process.

You never really understand a person…

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” – Harper Lee

And sometimes despite climbing inside a person’s skin, you may still not ‘understand’ them or what drove them to behave in a certain way. When you find yourself in that spot, it might be a good time to remember that you perhaps may not understand everyone and their behaviour but you have the infinite capacity within to accept and love them despite all that they are, all that they do…and however different they might seem to be. Your heart is filled with a love that is deeper than the ocean and you can choose to use that ‘depth’ to accept that which you cannot understand and that which is so different to anything that you have known.

Go on…try it.

Life does not require us…

“Life does not require us to be consistent, cruel, patient, helpful, angry, rational, thoughtless, loving, rash, open-minded, neurotic, careful, rigid, tolerant, wasteful, rich, downtrodden, gentle, sick, considerate, funny, stupid, healthy, greedy, beautiful, lazy, responsive, foolish, sharing, pressured, intimate, hedonistic, industrious, manipulative, insightful, capricious, wise, selfish, kind or sacrificed.

Life does, however, require us to live with the consequences of our choices.”

Take off that mask !

Wearing a mask
Day in and day out
Lonely & exhausted
Carrying the charade, you think you must.
You begin to forget
Who you really are

That mask
Your protection & your barrier
Between you and you.
Alienating and crumbling
Fragmenting your sense of self
Tearing into your integrity

How did you forget?
The core of your being
Your beautiful soul
That exists without masks
Intrinsically quiet and observant
Willing to open up its fragrance to the world.

Oh, why do you cover all that beauty
With that unforgiving mask
I know, life has been tough
I know you surrendered
Took the incentive
And raised the barriers

But you are beautiful
Despite the tears that stain your cheeks
With all that you consider imperfect within
Along with broken dreams and that abyss of sorrow
Unmet desires and unfulfilled yearnings
Despite infidelities and broken trust

You are vast
You are infinite
I know you feel small
But that you are not
You are powerful
You are love and courage personified

And you are here, now
Standing tall in this precious space
Own your thoughts
Feel the eternal & the finite
For you are
The unmasked master of your destiny

The other choice…

Universe has a way of taking care of our needs.

Most of us have experienced times in our lives when we have felt beaten down to the bone, been accused unfairly, spoken about in an unjust manner, felt rejected, dejected, abandoned and humiliated by those we love dearly. The pain is excruciating and deep – mainly because in our perception, those we who we ‘love’ carried out this painful behaviour.

In our journey of emotional & spiritual growth, it is important to understand that people who indulge in that behaviour and more, are perhaps the best catalysts in our lives for us to learn the soul – lessons of acceptance, unconditional love and patience.

If we understand their role in our lives, then we would also understand that they are here to teach us acceptance of the ‘human’ in them, despite their behaviour. They provide us with an opportunity to learn to love them as they are – however hard a task that might be. They also provide us an alternate or complementary opportunity to stand up for our selves as and when required.

When we understand their role in our lives and in their contribution to our emotional growth, we are able to look at these souls with hearts filled with love and understanding. We begin to understand that most likely, they are unaware of how their behaviour affects us or anyone else for that matter. How can we possibly hold anger or misgiving against people who are saying things or displaying behaviour that is based in total unawareness? How does one stay angry with someone who is completely oblivious of the effect their behaviour is having on others?

Having said that, it is to be remembered that we cannot and must not absolve them of their responsibility for their behaviour. Words and actions never form on the tongue. They are born out of a thought process. When someone is obnoxious, rude or plain uncaring in their words and actions towards us, obviously they have made a choice to be that way. They had a choice to be rude, obnoxious, and hurtful OR to be silent (in their actions and words). They had a choice and they made a choice. Similarly we have a choice 1) to be furious with their behaviour and retaliate and/or break- up with them 2) we have a choice to understand their role in our lives and look at the positive outcome of such relationships 3) we also have a choice to ignore them, their behaviour and carry on as before.

In this article I am choosing to go along with choice # 2.

Every choice we make is followed by the consequences of that choice. Sometimes we think thru the consequences and sometimes we don’t.  Either ways consequences loom large on the horizon of every single action we take. The fact that someone chose to be hurtful makes them responsible for the consequences of their actions. Each one of us has a choice to act in a certain way – whatever the situation. Each one of us is responsible – for the consequences of the choice that we made. I know I am.

They choose to be hurtful and oblivious of effect of their actions, we choose to be understanding of their behaviours – whilst experiencing emotional and spiritual growth, and learning to safeguard ourselves.

Loving and accepting people who hurt us with their pain-inflicting words and hurtful actions, is our choice…similarly we also have a choice to limit our interactions with them to safeguard our boundaries from getting breached each time we interact with them.

You owe that to you and I owe the same to me.

As balanced we might be as individuals, whatever professions we might belong to, at the end of the day each one of us is a human being, encompassed with human emotions and fallibility. Just like a teacher may not know all answers all the time, a beautician may have a sudden attack of acne or have a bad hair day and an artist may feel completely deprived of creativity – there can be enough and more storms that rage within a human heart that are capable of creating an imbalance within a person – whatever the reason.

Understanding , acceptance and love are at the core of that we are all made of.

It’s our duty and our honour to find that core and work from it as a base for our day-to-day lives. When we come from love, understanding and acceptance – all battles dissolve. All that is left and surrounds us is peace and tranquility. We have started out on the path of letting go of addictive ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. We still have needs and wants but without the addictive factor that makes them rule our lives. It’s wonderful to understand those who inflict pain upon us through their behaviour, but it is also marvelous to understand our need to safeguard ourselves by understanding and limiting the toxic interactions.

As I said at the beginning of this post, Universe has a way of taking care of our needs – for the universe never abandons its child.

This morning as I looked around to find a quote for the readers on my Facebook page – this is what I chanced upon…something that was hidden in my archives and something that speaks loud and clear to each one of us – providing us with the required permissions and affirming our rights in the gentlest ways possible.

“You don’t need anyone’s affection or approval in order to be good enough. When someone rejects or abandons or judges you, it isn’t actually about you. It’s about them and their own insecurities, limitations, and needs, and you don’t have to internalize that. Your worth isn’t contingent upon other people’s acceptance of you – it’s something inherent. You exist, and therefore, you matter. You’re allowed to voice your thoughts and feelings. You’re allowed to assert your needs and take up space. You’re allowed to hold onto the truth that who you are is exactly enough. And you’re allowed to remove anyone from your life who makes you feel otherwise.”
